How I felt working with UCSD?
Working with University School of Pediatrics has been an amazing opportunity. Being exposed to the Health Promotion profession has exposed me to a new found love and passion. The feeling of accomplishment after successfully hosting an event at different schools is truly indescribably. The task of promoting a healthier diet and lifestyle of eating 3 to 5 cups of fruits and vegetables a day while getting 60 minutes of play has made a positive change with the schools our program interacts with. The positive feedback and excitement from the students, families, and faculty makes the experience even more worthwhile.
What was most shocking?
Coming into the internship it was really shocking to see how many people were just uneducated about the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. For example, the health and wellness promotion for the month of November was the Rethink Your Drink Campaign. With this promotion, we displayed different beverage options and illustrated how much sugar is contained with each beverage. This campaign was a great eye opener for many students, family, faculty, and even myself; the look of shock was truly priceless. In addition to the different month promotion campaigns, our team worked with the San Diego Unified School Districts brainstorming on ways in which we can get students to eat healthier in the school cafeteria. A shocking component working with the San Diego Unified School District was that students are given high end fresh produce in their school cafeteria. Although this sounds great, the biggest issue with the fresh produce is that student’s aren’t eating the fresh produce provided for them in the school cafeteria. Being a part of the board panel and discussing different ways and approaches to tackle the problem at large was definitely a great experience.
What was the most inspiring moment in my internship experience?
Truthfully working with such a great team has been inspiring. Having the opportunity to work with great health professionals has been a remarkable experience. More importantly the team I worked with, has been truly inspiring. My two supervisors Kate and Shana, they have really opened my eyes with passion. When an individual works through passion, there is no such thing as actually working. I definitely saw how they both would go above and beyond expectations to get the job done. Countless hours of planning, promoting, gathering information, and materials; it was amazing to have such a great leadership team. The other interns I worked with as well were all inspiring, their hard work and dedication to the internship was very impressive. This past semester, us interns (Tasnim, Martin, and Alan) we have all become professional jugglers, managing so many tasks, jobs, other internships, school, and Oh yea our social life. From one of the events, I’d say the absolute most inspiring moment would have to be getting an admiring comment from a parent, saying how because of our promotions she as a mother has changed her life permanently for the better. Hearing that we can have such a positive and big affect on people really pushes me and inspires me to making changes daily as a future health professional.
